About Frontier

Frontier was established in 1989 as a non-profit conservation and development non-governmental organisation (NGO) dedicated to safeguarding biodiversity and ecosystem integrity and building sustainable livelihoods for marginalised communities in the world's poorest countries. Our first projects were in Tanzania, one of the world's poorest countries. Carrying out groundbreaking surveys in remote forest, savannah, and marine environments, our dedicated teams of volunteers set about building a comprehensive picture of areas that were heretofore ignored, despite being, as we discovered, among the most biodiverse areas in the world.

Roles Available

Harmful fishing practices and overfishing have left the oceans with damaged reefs and threatened marine species. Covering more than 70 percent of the earth’s surface and as one of the most biodiverse parts of the planet, the ocean is essential to keeping the world’s ecosystem healthy. Not only is it a source of vast biodiversity, it provides much of the food and income for many communities globally.

By mapping habitats and educating local communities, Frontier’s projects and the volunteers that help undertake the research aim to protect marine ecosystems and to implement sustainable coastal management. Volunteers carry out vital research into the health of the reefs and species populations that then inform environmental policy, with the eventual aim of restoring and protecting marine biodiversity.

While on a Frontier marine conservation and Diving placement, you can earn your PADI diving qualification and a BTEC in Tropical Habitat Conservation. We also offer longer-term placements for students wishing to undertake field work and research to support their degree, masters or PhD.
