About Grant Thornton

Who We Are

We're incredibly proud of our award-winning internships and placements, and pleased you told us just how good they are. We were once again named best provider of internships and placements by Rate My Placement based on the amazing reviews of our previous interns and placement students.
Grant Thornton is one of the world’s leading audit, tax and advisory firms, with offices in over 100 countries. But we are much more than just accountants – and so are the people that work for us. We’re a complex, ambitious organisation, helping over 40,000 clients in the UK alone to improve their financial performance and manage risk through our specialised business advisory services.
The summer internship program is a chance for you to discover more about Grant Thornton and what it means to work here as a graduate trainee. This is a great opportunity to make the most of your penultimate university summer; developing new skills, learning more about commercial issues and ensuring your C.V. stands out from the competition when you graduate.

As a summer intern you'll have the opportunity to join one of five areas: audit, public sector audit, tax, actuarial and technology risk services.

What you'll be doing

Audit:

Our interns tell us that there's never a dull day when working in audit. The variety and challenge is what keeps it exciting and being part of something that's fundamentally right at the heart of business gets them out of bed each morning. As an intern, you 'll be working with and advising dynamic organisations of all different sizes and from a wide range of sectors, delivering effective and innovative solutions to help unlock their potential for growth. You'll be central to their growth journey; as a trusted adviser you'll be helping them achieve their ambitions and taking them from where they are to where they want to be.

Public sector audit:

Grant Thornton has become the number one supplier of public sector audit services to local governments and the NHS, something we're really proud of. The work we do here impacts absolutely everyone across the whole of the UK.
The public sector audit team focuses on the public bodies, government departments and national services that are constantly in the news, as they reorganise their financial operations according to the changing government legislation. The scope for making a difference is huge and the business advisers who work within this area talk about the sense of value they bring on a daily basis. You 'll spend most of your time onsite with clients, such as local government and NHS bodies, helping them to continue delivering services in the most cost-effective way.

Tax:

Our clients look to us not only to save money, but also to ensure they are operating within the law. Working in the tax team, it's about interpreting complex legislation and delivering solutions in a way that the client understands. Tax is a cost to their business and we, at Grant Thornton, are here to operate efficiently, to manage that.
We hire interns into several different areas of tax: Corporate Tax, Tax Investigations, Entrepreneurial & Private Client Services, VAT, Financial Services, Financial Planning, Employer Solutions, Property and Transfer Pricing.

Actuarial:

As a trusted business adviser in the actuarial team, you'll need to be a confident communicator, as you advise your clients of the best way to mitigate risk, and promote growth within their organisation. You'll work closely with your clients on project-related services, guiding them through planning, budget management, and risk resolution.
No two assignments are the same, and one day you could be helping a pensions company understand its future liabilities, and the next, advising an insurance company on how much capital it requires. You'll constantly be challenged as you explore different businesses to identify and analyse areas vulnerable to risk. Here more than anywhere you'll need to balance a thorough technical understanding with a passion for business and the wider market which helps unlock potential for growth for the dynamic organisations we work with.

Technology risk services

Technology risk services deals directly with all risks involved with using business technology. Here, you'll be able to balance your interest in consulting with your love of technology. It's one of the most exciting teams, giving you exposure to up-to-date technologies used by dynamic organisations across the UK and further afield.
As part of the technology risk services team, you will be working with private and public sector clients, and you'll need to have the ability to think strategically and see the big picture as well as focus on the technical elements and drill down to the relevant detail for the client you're working on. You will deliver solutions that will enable clients to strengthen internal controls, implement sound organisational strategies, increase technological capabilities and improve their operational efficiency. You'll need to balance a passion for business with a passion for technology to help our clients unlock their potential for growth.
