About the job

This exciting opportunity based in the Mechanical Engineering department at ASM Assembly Systems Weymouth, is available on a 13 month work placement for undergraduate students seeking sandwich placements as part of their studies. The anticipated start date for this placement would be July 2016.

The main purpose of this role is provide mechanical engineering design and development assistance to any ASM Assembly Systems project

Main Duties

  • This is an entry-level position to the Mechanical Engineering department and hence responsibilities will be dependent on experience to date. In the main, the jobholder will be responsible for assisting members of the team with project work or designing/ developing specific parts/ items, concentrating predominantly at sub-assembly level. E.g. minor alterations required to functionality or modifications to brackets. The jobholder will also assist with areas of Engineering Change and modifications to existing systems where appropriate.
  • Build initial design/ prototype, with or without outside assistance, and subsequently test in accordance with department standards.
  • Liaise with Team/ Project Leader to clarify objectives, area of responsibility and standards associated with each specific piece of work to be undertaken.
  • Complete project deliverables as required to agreed targets (time, cost, quality).
  • Where appropriate liaise with internal staff (e.g. Customer Service Engineers, Engineers from within Mechanical Engineering and other ASM Assembly Systems Engineering disciplines) for the purpose of clarifying the exact nature of identified faults and parameters for project success.
  • Through appropriate testing procedures, ensure new/ modified item is ‘fit for purpose’ and in line with overall design requirements.
  • Where appropriate build initial design/ prototype, with or without outside assistance, and subsequently test in accordance with department standards.
  • Liaise with suppliers to confirm specifications of new/modified items for prototype and production purposes.
  • Produce and complete appropriate documentation related to the mechanical design process e.g. 3D CAD models, engineering drawings, calculations, change requests, relevant bills of materials etc, relating to the new or modified item.
  • Where appropriate liaise with Manufacturing Engineering to move a product through the NPI process.
  • Assist where necessary with any Value Engineering exercises.
  • Attend design review meetings, as required by the project team leader/s, to confirm progress made, difficulties encountered and to receive information from other project team members.
  • Comply with all relevant departmental and company standards/ procedures and complete associated documentation.

Person Specification

  • Currently studying for a degree in an Engineering field, with a strong interest in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Able to describe, both written and orally, systems, machines, and their operation or ability to learn.
  • Able to communicate effectively face to face and in writing with people at all levels in an organisation.
  • A strong sense of order, efficiency, and completeness, and able to create systems to achieve this
  • Able to apply a logical and systematic approach when solving relatively complex problems.
  • Approachable and responsive to new ideas.
  • Able to organise own time and workload to deliver against tasks set by others, with a short to medium term horizon.
