About Transport For London

With a population of over 8.6 million and more than 17 million visitors every year, London is a city that’s always on the move. Transport for London (TfL) is responsible for looking after the intricate planning and everyday operation of the Capital’s transport system. Our people make sure that millions of residents, workers and visitors arrive safely at their destinations, day in, day out. Every journey matters to us. Join us on one of our graduate schemes and, as well as enjoying some exciting career opportunities, your work could also have a direct influence on the future of London and the people who live, work and visit here.

We keep the city moving. Transport is central to driving economic growth, jobs and housing. And the work we do at TfL has a direct impact on the lives of millions – every single day. Our remit includes everything from the Tube, London Overground, Docklands Light Railway, TfL Rail, London Trams, London River Services, Dial-a-Ride, Victoria Coach Station, Emirates Air Line, to the city’s cycle hire scheme and of course, our iconic red buses. But there’s a lot more to it than that.

We also regulate taxis and the private hire trade, run the Congestion Charging scheme, manage the city’s 580km red route road network and operate every one of the Capital’s 6,200 traffic signals. And we work to ensure a safe environment for pedestrians and cyclists. We’re pioneers in integrated ticketing and in providing information to help people move around London. Oyster is the world’s most popular smartcard, and contactless payment is making travel even more convenient. Real-time travel information is provided by us and through third parties, who use our data to power their apps and other services.

BAME Press Office placement

Working on the stories and events affecting London's transport network means that ours is one of the busiest press offices in the UK. Writing press releases, dealing with journalists and working across media and social media campaigns is all in a day's work.

Based in one of the UK's busiest press offices, you'll get a sense of what working in a high-pressured PR environment is like and the essential skills to start your career in PR.

Our BAME Press Office internship scheme is a diversity initiative targeted at students and recent graduates of African, African-Caribbean, Asian or Chinese origin. These groups are under-represented regionally, and nationally, in PR which is why this scheme was created. Our approach mirrors the view of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR), which has said that practical steps need to be taken to bring about a more ethnically diverse industry.

Our internship scheme was awarded 'Best Internship of the Year' in the first ever PRCA Internships Awards this year. We have also been shortlisted for 'outstanding in-house public relations team' for the prestigious 2015 PR Week Awards and for 'in-house team of the year (public sector)' in the PRCA awards. In 2013, our press office was awarded 'in-house team of the year', by the CIPR, joining a number of accolades and awards for our work.

Industry diversity

In 2014, the CIPR's diversity monitoring statistics estimate that 9% of the public relations workforce is comprised of non-white practitioners.

Our internship seeks to support the CIPR Diversity Strategy, which aims to develop an inclusive culture, raise general awareness of diversity within the public relations industry and increase the number of public relations practitioners from all backgrounds.

The benefits

We offer free travel on TfL’s network (zones 1-9).

Application process

If you meet the initial requirements of this programme, the first step is an online 'situational strengths test'. Candidates who match our criteria will then be invited to take part in further stages of our selection process which includes an online numerical test, a video interview and a final stage assessment centre.

We welcome applications from people from BAME communities irrespective of age, gender, sexual orientation, faith or disability.

Equality Act 2010

Our BAME Press Office internship scheme is advertised under section 158 of the Equality Act 2010.

For the purposes of this advert, BAME refers to people who are of African, African-Caribbean, Asian or Chinese ethnic origin.

Further opportunities

Once the internship is completed, any ongoing employment with us would be subject to you making a successful application for a position through our usual competitive recruitment processes.
