Electronic Engineering Function

The Electronic Engineering Function provides complex electronic and test system solutions to meet the demanding needs of missile projects.  This work starts at the very beginning of the design process where we develop electronic architectures from the requirements received. Then we design, manufacture, test and qualify the product, supporting it through production and into service with the customer.

We have opportunities in Electronics in both our embedded design teams and also our newly created Test Systems multi-skilled team.  These teams are integrated, multi-skilled teams providing the opportunity to work alongside other skill areas such as Mechanical and Software engineers, all focussed on the goal of delivering effective Embedded and Test System solutions.

Graduate, Undergraduate and Summer Placement Embedded and Test System Engineers play a vital role in the development of our complex products where efficiency, repeatability and reliability are paramount.

About the role

As key members of these teams, graduates and undergraduates will develop an extensive knowledge and gain hands on experience in one or a combination of the disciplines below. Summer Placement students are usually kept together in their own team on a specific project, but the disciplines below are still relevant but are recognised to be of a lower level of maturity and with a scope for development.

  • Embedded circuit design (Analogue, Digital, FPGA etc..)
  • Analogue and Digital circuit test techniques and circuit design.
  • Microwave / RF test measurement techniques and design
  • Test Software development tools (i.e. NI Labview, CVI).
  • Automated instrumentation and control technologies.
  • Analysis and characterisation techniques.

They are involved in all aspects of the design lifecycle including:-

  • Requirements analysis and specification (HW & SW).
  • Architectural design (HW & SW).
  • Detailed design (HW & SW).
  • System integration.
  • System validation.
  • System characterisation.

Academic Background

Undergraduate and Summer Placement Students will be studying for a degree (preferably a Masters) in Electronics, General Engineering (including electronics) or closely related subject.

Graduates will be qualified to degree level or above (minimum 2:2 honours degree or equivalent) in electronic engineering, general engineering (with electronics) or related subjects.  A practical knowledge of software development would be beneficial, but not essential.

The Graduate Scheme within Electronics Engineering is accredited with the IET and Graduates are expected, and supported, to work towards C. Eng registration.  I. Eng registration can also be supported where appropriate.

Undergraduates and Summer Placements where applicable, will be supported to achieve Eng.Tech registration through the IET during their 1 year placement or over more than one Summer Placement as appropriate.  Training in the use of tools will be provided, as necessary, but previous use of tools would be an advantage (Schematic Editors, FPGA tools, Labview etc...).
