Technical Writer Intern, 2016 (10 weeks)

"I love getting to the heart of complex technical concepts, and explaining them to other people in a way that makes them seem simple. In this job, I'm part of a development team of fantastic people, working to make software that's as usable as possible. It's challenging, and it never stops being interesting." Beth Aitman, Technical Writer

What we are looking for

Are you an excellent writer with a passionate interest in technology? Do you point out spelling mistakes in menus, review your friends’ essays, and rant about the appalling user experience of the latest Facebook update? Are you keen to find out more about software development?

If so, you sound like you’ve got what it takes to be our technical writer intern for 2016.

Technical Writers at Redgate work in small teams with software engineers, testers, and usability experts to help develop software applications that are ingeniously simple to use. With a great team around you, you'll be responsible not just for customer-facing documentation, but for the quality of the software application itself.

You will have a dedicated mentor to help you through your internship and introduce you to many aspects of technical writing. We’ll value you as a full member of the team from the moment you walk through our doors.

What we’ll offer you

  • A chance to work in an experienced software development team, and learn about technical writing as a discipline
  • We’ll teach you about different modes of writing, and help you adapt your writing style for different formats and audiences
  • You’ll get the opportunity to work directly on user interfaces, and see how we apply the principles of good user experience to applications
  • We’ll give you real autonomy to work independently on a team and make decisions, with plenty of support
  • We’ll meet with you regularly to review your work and give you constructive feedback about how to improve

What makes you Redgate’s next technical writer intern?

  • You have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • You can learn to use new software quickly and have a genuine interest in technology.
  • You’re at least a year into a university degree.
  • You instinctively know good software design when you see it, and have great ideas for how to improve user interfaces.
  • Explaining complex, technical ideas in language anyone could understand comes naturally to you.
  • You have a genuine eye for detail and have checked through your application letter at least five times to catch any mistakes.
  • You thrive in a team, enjoy working alongside all kinds of different people, and get on with everyone.

What’s the package?

  • You’ll be working 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday, with flexible hours
  • You’ll receive £380 per week
  • You’ll start in June or July for a minimum of ten weeks over the summer holiday
  • You’ll get some great Redgate benefits, including:
    • A relaxed and professional environment
    • No dress code
    • Free parking
    • Free breakfast and lunch
