About the internship

GVI’s Wildlife Conservation Internship in South Africa is based in the iconic African bushveld of the Limpopo province. Interns will live and work in Karongwe, a private game reserve that is home to a large number of magnificent flora and fauna, including the famous Big Five. A Big Five reserve refers to a reserve that contains these five famous animals: lion, elephant, buffalo, rhinoceros and leopard. Interns will collect data on big cats with a strong focus on leopards, cheetahs, and especially the majestic lions of the area. Additionally interns will learn new conservation techniques, track animals using telemetry equipment, and be involved with community outreach initiatives. Our passionate staff are dedicated to helping interns gain and improve vital skills to give them a head start in their careers.

Benefits

Interns will gain internationally recognised qualifications related to telemetry and research training, a biological surveys course, wildlife identification techniques, leadership training, and First Aid and CPR certification. Although our internships are unpaid, we offer a great opportunity for interns to be considered for work placement after successfully completing 12 weeks on the internship. Our interns typically receive work placements with local conservation organisations, game reserves and lodges in South Africa’s bushveld region. Above and beyond exceptional work experience, interns will also receive all the relevant training, accommodation and meals as part of the internship.
