Student Scheme for Technologists

Working on unique technical projects. Developing your skills in a range of advanced technologies. Stretching your curiosity. Helping to combat cyber criminals, hackers and terrorists, and protect the UK’s security. That’s what you can look forward to on our Student Technology Scheme.

As the UK’s cyber security experts, we use a variety of the most up-to-the-minute technologies to help protect the UK’s people, businesses and interests against a wide range of cyber threats. Join one of our schemes in this complex, challenging and stimulating technical environment and you’ll be involved in the kind of projects you won’t find anywhere else.

Summer placements: Our summer placements offer 11 weeks’ paid work during the summer between your penultimate and final year, or up to 22 weeks during the final two summers of your degree. The first such placement starts on 27 June, 2016.

Industrial placement year: A 51-week paid placement during your degree. This particular scheme starts on 12 September, 2016.

We offer schemes in five technical disciplines and you’ll need to choose which area’s right for you:

Our Software Development teams use cutting edge technologies and processes to develop a variety of products. These include high performance near real time data processing systems, large complex databases, rapid reaction prototypes and highly optimised embedded systems.

Advanced Technology Research (ATR) aims to understand new technologies and develop new approaches to deal with them. With C, C++, Perl or Java skills and good mathematical ability, you’ll enjoy research and working on problems either on your own or as part of a team.

Our Computer Network Operations Specialists are involved in cyber security and cyber intelligence. With strong coding and problem solving skills, you’ll understand internet communications protocols and how they’re secured, and operating systems and their programming interfaces.

As the National Technical Authority for Information Assurance, we use our technical expertise to protect the security of government systems. With excellent problem-solving skills and an enquiring mind you could be involved in network and security systems, incident response, vulnerability research, biometrics or a whole lot more.

In Systems Engineering, you’ll apply your skills to real-world problems, working with and developing the very latest technologies and gaining unique technical experience. With the creative ability to tackle systems engineering problems in different ways and to see the bigger picture, you’ll understand the need to balance technology with business needs and processes. You should be studying a first degree in Systems Engineering, Telecommunications Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Microelectronics Engineering, IT Infrastructure and Network Engineering, or Software Engineering.

What you’ll need

You should be graduating in 2017 or 2018. For all areas except Systems Engineering, you should be studying for your first degree in a relevant subject, such as Computer Forensics, Computer Science, Electronic Engineering, Information Technology, Information Assurance, Information Security, Physics, Software Engineering or Telecommunications.

For all ATR placements, as part of the essential requirements above, you should also have the following A Levels:

  • Grade B or above in Mathematics (or Further, Pure, Advanced, Applied Maths or Statistics)
  • Grade B or above in Physics or another science based subject
  • Grade B or above in any other subject (this does not include General Studies)

Prove yourself on your placement and, if you gain a 2:2 or above, you may be considered for a permanent role.
