A Background to Human Resources
Human Resources is focused on the organisation of the company’s most valuable asset, human capital. To be as effective as possible, the management of human capital is vital to ensuring the people working there individually and collectively contribute to the achievement of the objectives of the business.
But how do you look after human capital? An HR department is integral to the smooth running of a large business and where the term ‘hiring, firing and training’ is a common stereotype for HR staff, the effective execution of these three factors ensures the productivity of the organisation is optimised and put more simply; less time is wasted.
The overriding perk of working in HR is the interaction with people on a daily basis. If you demand a proactive job and enjoy working with people then HR provides that. There won’t be a ‘typical’ day and as a student going into a HR role you will be the expert in recruiting graduates and students so expect to spend days out of the office at fairs and exhibitions and then in assessment and training rooms identifying the most impressive candidates.

Guest Blogger Godfrey - 1 Month Down and 11 Months To Go....
Our Industry Insiders: Latest From the Blog | Published October 2009
Find out what our Guest Bloggers are getting up to. Throughtout the year we will be following the progress of our Guest Bloggers as they find a placement or keep us updated as to what they are doing on their placement. Click here to read all entries from our bloggers or click here to meet them.

Whilst all of my uni friends are now going back to finish their degrees, I am only a full month and a couple of days into my placement. But I am finding every minute of it interesting and exciting because I am learning so many skills and techniques I know for a fact I will need / use later on during my career.
My first project is near to completion, which is an e-staff handbook. I feel the e-staff handbook was a good project for me to start on because I had the opportunity to communicate with all levels of the organisation at Brent and build on my transferable skills. Now I can build on these newly found working relationships.

From the start of my placement, I have been involved with a wide range of tasks from assessment centre’s to meetings with other councils, which have been a real benefit because I have had the chance to develop networking opportunities. I have also had the chance to attend an Excel Intermediate Workshop and Internet Content Workshop, both of which I can use later on in my career. Hopefully I will be attending many more workshops as the days go on.
This week I will start working with the various departments within HR so I will get a variety of HR experience, which i feel will be a good move. I have also had meetings concerning my next two project’s, they are not confirmed but involve looking into the current procedure for CRB’s and also looking at the Contract of Variation (this occurs when a employee changes any part of their contract). Both of the projects are very interesting and I am sure I will gain a lot from them whilst at the same time doing Employment Relations work.
The next couple of months will be a very interesting and challenging time for me. I really couldn't ask for more from Brent Council they are all really nice and helpful and they are also open to questions!

Have you done an industrial placement?
If you've done one, we'd love to know, and so would other students looking to take placements or internships this year. It only takes a couple of minutes.
