Questions & Answers
- What was your experience of TUI?
When applying for placements I knew I wanted to work for a diverse, multinational company. So working in the head office of largest tour operator in the UK was, clearly, an amazing opportunity. But don’t worry you don’t need a background in tourism to be considered, I study business management and the other placement students study a huge variety of different subjects.
I think this commercial placement is pretty unique. You’re given the same responsibilities as a full time member of the team, which means I’ve learnt many valuable and transferable skills during my year at TUI. I really enjoy being such a valued member of my team.
As a trading assistant I manage my own regions independently. Right now, I’m looking after the whole of Cyprus and North Africa, with the support of my line manager. It’s exciting and rewarding to see how my decisions and actions affect TUI’s financial success through trading millions of pounds worth of product.
During this year, I’ve learnt to use a variety of systems and my computing skills have definitely improved, as has my ability to time manage to ensure I meet my deadlines. I’ve made lots of friends around the business including the other placement students and have made lots of memories from different social events; it’s definitely a welcoming, friendly atmosphere to work in.
TUI also offers an excellent graduate scheme which I’ll be applying to.
Background
A World Of Opportunity
If you enjoy working with people, have a passion for customer service and food, or want to travel the world, a career in hospitality, leisure, travel and tourism (HLTT) could be right up your street! Employing around two million people and accounting for approximately seven percent of all jobs, HLTT is one of the largest industry sectors in the UK — and it's growing. When replacement demand is taken into account, the industry will need an estimated one million additional workers by 2017, including over 200,000 managers.
And, with a 'golden decade of sporting events,' including the 2012 Olympics, 2014 Commonwealth Games and 2015 Rugby World Cup, attracting millions of tourist to the UK, it's an exciting time to join the industry.
With fourteen vibrant industries to choose from — including: hotels, restaurants, gambling, foodservice management (sometimes called contract catering), events, visitor attractions and travel agents — a job in HLTT could take you anywhere; from booking luxury travel trips for businesses, to organising hospitality and catering services at high-profile events like the FA Cup Final or Brit Awards.
You'll gain transferable skills if you want a change of environment — as a chef, for example, you could work in a restaurant, hotel, holiday park or even on a cruise ship — and there are opportunities for graduates to progress quickly into management roles. If you're interested in a career in HLTT, you can find a wealth of detailed information on careers, jobs and training on People 1st's UKSP Website.
