What was the application process like?
The application process was fairly similar to those in other banks and included an online application and online testing. This was followed by face-to-face interviews with individuals from HR and a final-round assessment centre with individuals from investment banking.
What did you do on a daily basis?
Most of my time was devoted to preparing pitch books for clients across the mining & metals and oil & gas space. However, during the second half of my internship I was responsible for creating an industry review of the uranium sector with supervision from a senior member of the mining team. By the end of my internship I could consider myself somewhat of an expert.
Highlights of the Job?
The internship provided many opportunities to gain valuable exposure to clients and work with senior members of the team, which is quite rare for a summer internship in investment banking.
What was your greatest challenge?
The greatest challenge I had and which I expect most interns have is to make yourself as valuable as possible without feeling like you are hindering the efficiency of those around you. Initially it is crucial for you to develop sound fundamentals in finance and within your sector.
What did you learn on your placement / internship?
While I had opportunities to brush up on my financial knowledge at university I was completely new to natural resources, which is a particularly technical field. However all of my colleagues were so helpful with regard to my inexperience, and what had potential to be a very difficult experience proved to be quite enjoyable and very rewarding .
What was the social life like?
There were many formally and informally RBC organised events throughout the summer of my internship.Within the office, interns are sat amongst the analysts and so there is limitless opportunity to integrate yourself and get to know your colleagues in a professional environment.
Any top tips for a student interested in a placement / internship at RBC Capital Markets?
It is absolutely crucial to ask as many questions as possible. There is a direct correlation between how useful you are as an intern and how much you learn on the job. No one expects you to become immediately useful, but the more questions you ask, the more you learn, and the more you will be able to contribute to team. It is a truly rewarding experience on its own, but your proactively will make it that much better.
