Meet Celia
- Name: Celia
- University: University of Pennsylvania
- Course: International Relations with European Studies
- Position: Global Client Group Intern
Describe a normal day in the office
I typically arrive around 8.15am, check emails and then join the rest of the EMEA institutional business for our weekly meeting. Then I have a few hours to carry out some competitor research at my desk before joining the other interns for an informal “Lunch and Learn” discussion with a head of one of the European businesses. In the afternoon I might sit in on a European Fixed Income conference call, spend a hour learning about a specific BlackRock product with a designated product expert and then have a meeting with my line manager before I leave my desk at a very reasonable 6.30pm.
How did BlackRock prepare you for your internship?
I knew very little about BlackRock before the summer, but the firm has been excellent about bringing everyone up to speed. All the interns took part in a two day induction at the start of the ten week internship which included how the business was structured and most importantly, investment management training. Coming from a non finance related degree, this was hugely helpful and made me feel at ease with the new material.
What did you enjoy most about your internship?
Without doubt, the most impressive aspect of the internship has been the people I have met. Unlike many firms in the industry, every person I have engaged with has been welcoming, warm and overwhelmingly happy to answer my countless questions. People here really do live by the unifying ‘One BlackRock’ mantra. I also greatly appreciate the accessibility to so many senior figures and ability to profit from their wise experience.
Would you want to return to work full time at BlackRock and if so, why?
I would definitely come back to work at BlackRock. It maintains a very holistic approach to investing, with everyone thinking of the client first and this sentiment clearly acts as the fabric of the firm. I genuinely feel as though I am a valued part of my team and have been treated very well. BlackRock’s size provides the flexibility to move to different offices around the world and to explore different roles across businesses which is also a highly attractive longer term opportunity.
What is your funniest memory of your time at BlackRock?
Within the first 15 minutes of meeting my team, they made me perform my favourite karaoke song as stated on my intern information: the Pina Colada Song. Within seconds I had the whole team behind me singing along!
