Meet Stuart
- Name: Stuart
- University: University of Hertfordshire
- Course: Mechanical Engineering
- Position: Year-long undergraduate placement
I am undertaking the year-long placement scheme within MBDA, and this has been split into 2x6 month placements within the department I was recruited into. My first placement was platform integration on ASRAAM. That was an interesting placement, and I was able to see quite a bit of hardware. Specifically I started working on the environmental encoder on the ASRAAM missile and I was able to learn how things work whilst gaining hands-on experience.
My second placement is on the Loitering Munitions Fire Shadow, and this involves keeping an eye on what hardware is coming in, where the hardware is going to be allocated, and getting to know people around the project. I have gained a good view of the overall project and met a lot of people across the site.
I have a buddy, who is a member of the graduate scheme, and she is available to speak to about any issues I may have; not necessarily just about the company, but also to assist with settling in, which is useful.
I also have a mentor, who is a more senior member of the company. He has taught me more about the business and the ways things work. Both my mentor and line managers have been very supportive, and I feel that line managers don’t look at me as an undergraduate, but they look at me as a resource as much as any other employee. I have been given ‘real work’, and have been able to use the skills I’ve acquired from university.
I have been working hard, but there is a social side to MBDA as well amongst the graduates and undergraduates, which begins at our induction in September, and continues throughout the placement, and so I have made some great friends during my time.
Upon finishing my placement around October time I should hopefully receive an offer to come back either as a summer placement or as a graduate next year (dependent on how many years remaining at university). If I choose to accept the graduate offer (which is very likely!) I will receive a bursary during my final year of University which is about £1,500 – a pretty good incentive! Also if I do accept a returning offer I won’t have to go through interviews again because I have completed a successful placement. Overall I’m really enjoying the whole experience and would recommend MBDA to undergraduates for a placement.
