A wide range of Placement positions are available in Design Engineering, Manufacturing/Mechanical/ Electrical Engineering, Product Engineering, Shop Operations, Manufacturing Support, Product Development, Systems, Quality, Purchasing, Sales & Marketing, Supply Chain Management, IT, Finance, HR.
Positions are all 12 month Placements to begin Summer 2011 and are in the following locations: Cumbernauld, Darlington, Daventry, Huddersfield, Peterborough, Ramsgate, Stamford and Stockton, Wellingborough.
You will be provided with a structured training plan consisting of corporate training programmes, product awareness and any technical requirements. Bursaries are offered to the most outstanding Placement students. Are you ready to face new challenges, be given new opportunities, learn new skills?

Our preference is for students to be aiming towards a 2:1 or higher. A second language would also be beneficial to this global company.

What do you do on a daily basis?
The main aspect of my placement was working within the compliance department. This involves putting together journals for invoices, working with data; ensuring it gets to department leaders on time and dealing with general ad-hoc queries that may arise. I have also been involved in working with the other students here at Cummins in organising fund-raising events for the office which have included a Charity Auction for Children in Need and a Bake sale and coffee morning for Macmillan Cancer. Whilst working at Cummins, I was also offered the opportunity to work within the other Departments including Travel, Payables and General Ledger. This gave me a fuller insight into finance and how the different departments rely on each other to ensure that accurate information is sent out efficiently.
Highlights of the job
One of the main highlights of my placement was being able to work with such a large variety of people. Not only was I working with the employees within my department, but also internal customers from other plants and external suppliers. This gave me a greater insight into how businesses work and I could relate a lot of my theory learnt at university to real life situations. Another highlight was the fact that I was given my own jobs and responsibilities, which meant that I developed my time management skills and learnt how to work independently, ensuring that all my work was ready for the deadlines.
What did you learn on your placement?
I have learnt a lot more on my placement than I ever thought I would. The main area I believe I have developed is my communication skills. Through working with external customers and suppliers, I have learnt how to communicate appropriately through email and the phone. I also feel that I have improved my time management by working to deadlines. This is a great skill that I will take back to university with me and to future jobs after I have graduated. But the main thing I wanted to get out of my placement year was to link the theories learnt at university to real life business situations, and through working with Cummins, I believe that I will go back to university with a better understanding of Finance and the working environment.
