About BDO
BDO is a UK Member Firm of BDO International, the world’s fifth largest accountancy network with more than 1,000 offices in over 100 countries*. We specialise in helping businesses, whether start-ups, mid-tiers or multinationals, to achieve their goals.
We have our own very special culture. One that people enjoy working in, no matter what their background, age, sex or ethnicity. We want individuals who are bright and creative – who place importance on living our values. Who appreciate and respect people – whoever they are and wherever they come from.
We also care about sustainability. This is why we have developed a strong corporate social responsibility programme that encourages you to ‘give something back’ to the community, by volunteering and considering your impact on the environment.
Our strength in the market place is mirrored in our recent awards which include Accountancy Age ‘Audit Team of the Year 2008’, ‘Tax Team of the Year 2008’, ‘Corporate Finance Deal of the Year 2008’ and listed as one of the UK’s top employers in ‘The Sunday Times Top 100 Best Companies to Work For 2008’, and the ‘Financial Times Best Workplaces Awards 2008’. In 2009 we were awarded the highest new entry in the ‘The Times Top 100 Graduate Employer’ listing.
*Including exclusive alliances of BDO Member Firms.
Training
At BDO, every day prepares you for the next. We try to make training as flexible and appropriate as we can for all trainees. And we believe there is no substitute for first-hand experience. You will attend external tutor firms for your professional training, but we make sure you have all the study and revision time you need, as well as in-house support and extra tuition if you want it. Our results are excellent. Most of our graduates study for the ACA, awarded by the Institute of Chartered Accountants for England and Wales, but there are other routes to professional qualification, depending on the business stream you join.

In addition to an excellent technical knowledge and know-how programme, to demonstrate our commitment we have designed leadership and management development skills programmes and solutions which are designed to help you ‘widen your perspective’.

What made you apply to BDO?
I was looking to gain practical experience before starting the final year of my degree and decided that an internship with BDO would be the perfect way to do this. The reason I decided to apply for BDO was its reputation of being different from other firms in the industry by really focusing on the individual. Everything I had heard and read about BDO described how they looked to develop you as a person and actively seeks to give you responsibility straight away which is what appealed to me. Throughout the application process the people I dealt with were all extremely warm and personable and convinced me that I wouldn't be treated as just a number.
To what extent did you enjoy your internship/placement?
I found the internship extremely enjoyable; it more than satisfied every aspect of what I'd originally wanted to get out of it. The work was varied and enjoyable while the colleagues I worked alongside were all friendly and approachable. I felt I was given meaningful responsibility and was really able to understand what working in audit at BDO is like. The program felt well organised and plenty of opportunities were provided to socialise with other interns while being assigned an office 'buddy' and manager meant there was always someone to turn to.
How much responsibility were you given during your internship?
I was treated the same as a first year audit trainee would be at BDO and given responsibility from the start. I spent the majority of the internship working on the client sites and I was often assigned to complete sections of an audit myself, meaning I had the opportunity to deal with clients directly. The independence and responsibility afforded to me really made the internship feel worthwhile and let me understand what working for a firm like BDO is all about. Working in teams meant that there was plenty of support available and my work was checked by a senior, giving the opportunity for quick feedback on how I was doing.
How did the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in the final year of your degree studies?
As I joint major in accounting the internship fitted in well with my degree, I was able to apply what I already knew whilst using training and work I carried out to expand my knowledge and see things from a more practical perspective. I was able to understand some difficult concepts with the help of more experienced colleagues that have definitely proved useful - Especially in my auditing module! The opportunity to complete an independent project on a client improved my ability to produce professional reports and presentations which I also benefitted from in my final year.
How well organised was the internship set up?
The internship felt well organised from the beginning, Interns received packs detailing all essential information well in advance and it was explained how time would be split between head office and working at my regional office. The induction and training explained what type of work I would likely be doing and provided a good opportunity to meet and socialise with the nationwide interns at BDO. During my time in the office I was assigned to a number of different teams and got to experience a good variety of clients in a short space of time and I received feedback on all projects I was involved in. Finally a CSR project was organised for the final few days of the program which once again brought together all nationwide interns and was an enjoyable way to finish my internship.
