Job Title: Industrial Placement – Shift Manager (Transport/ Warehouse/ Brewery)

1. Set up – How did you discover Gist, how did you apply, how was your experience during the recruitment stages?

I initially discovered Gist on my university placement intranet, after which I immediately applied online. Gist's values were what initially attracted me to the role them being very much 'people focused' along with the opportunity of gaining challenging 'hands on' experience with 'real responsibility'. After my online application I was given a telephone interview from which I was asked to attend one of Gist's assessment centres. Throughout my recruitment experience everybody was friendly and supportive, making the process seem much less daunting. They very much expressed that the recruitment experience was a two way process with applicants being given the opportunity to get to know the company, what it does and about other Graduate/ IP experiences.

2. What is was/is your day to day role, what projects did you work on, what were your team sizes?

Upon joining Gist my first role was in ICT... with this role I assisted in devising and implementing a new addition to Carlsberg's goods in/out operations database. I then became a Transport Supervisor, supervising Carlsberg’s transport operation. This role involved managing up to 30 drivers per shift, planning transport of goods in/ out along with managing driver rules/ regulations/ legalities, disciplinary procedures and vehicle maintenance etc... This experience naturally led onto me becoming a Brewery shift manager where I was responsible for managing and overseeing the JIT operation of goods into and out of Carlsberg brewery, managing up to 30 forklift truck/ lorry drivers at any one time. I then went on to set up and manage a new storage and distribution operation for Gist which involved everything from instigating the initial operation inclusive of recruitment/ data control systems/ spreadsheets, to managing goods in/ out, dealing directly with customers/ potential customers, schedules and pretty much everything else that comes with running a warehouse/ transport operation. My daily roles were so variable no one day was ever the same, my motto became 'expect the unexpected' as you need to be prepared and willing to step up to any challenges in which you are faced.

3. How have you progressed in your role, what opportunities are there for further progression?

I initially started as a Transport Supervisor, swiftly moving to become a Brewery Shift Manager before being given the opportunity to manage a start-up operation for a new Gist customer. From this I was offered a position on Gist's graduate scheme, where I will be assisting in the start-up operation of a new multi-million pound contract. With Gist being such a fast paced/ innovative company, opportunities for promotion are endless.... Gist sees people as their most valuable asset with increasing investments in their human resources year on year. So literally with Gist the sky really is the limit.

4. Conclusion. Sum up the benefits of the scheme

The IP scheme for me was extremely challenging and rewarding. Before embarking upon my placement with Gist I knew not of what path I wanted my career to take, and now I am certain it lies within the logistics industry namely with Gist. I gained a wealth of invaluable experience/ knowledge within Gist/ logistics industry and general management, more so than ever expected. My time management skills are now second to none, furthermore my increased confidence, people/ team working skills have been of great benefit to me in embarking upon my final year studies at university. Undertaking a placement with Gist gives you real responsibility/ challenges, helps to put your academic studies into practice and provides an invaluable platform for your future career.
