Placement Employer’s Profile
About us
Established in 1903, Vauxhall has evolved into one of the UK’s leading automotive manufacturers. Our passion and customer-centric focus gives Vauxhall the competitive edge to produce award-winning vans and cars. Working as a team of passionate and innovative employees has shaped our business to competitively sell within the automotive market. Vauxhall’s continuous search for excellence has delivered the arrival of our first electric car, the Ampera. Awarded Green Car of the Year 2011 by “What Car?” magazine; the Ampera is due to be a great success when launched in 2012.
Vauxhall has become the driving force behind the Home Nation’s Football teams after signing a sponsorship agreement which will run up to and include the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Footballers such as Frank Lampard and Jermaine Defoe have visited our sites to meet our employees and internal competitions give employees the chance to see the professionals in action and experience Wembley’s spectacular atmosphere. Our employees also participate in annual events such as the London to Brighton bike ride and the 3 Peak Challenge. There are plenty of opportunities to connect with the workforce and contribute towards improving our working environment.

Meet Matthew
- Name: Matthew
- University: Oxford Brookes
- Course: BEng Motorsport Engineerings
- Position: Powertrain Engineer (ETC) at Millbrook
What tasks does your job encounter on a typical day?
I don’t really have a typical routine; my work varies on a day to day basis. However, I am required to check and respond to emails daily. Project work can consist of checking that my engines ran successfully in testing and then comparing the results with the test data. A thorough run of analysis on data is required to check for any problems and consequently there may be a need to organise work with technicians. I also have to speak to customers regularly to discuss any issues and update them on test progress. They may ask for test and analysis data, so I have to retrieve the results and then forward them on. Usually most of my time is spent trying to solve issues and mediating between two companies about the engines.
How do you think the placement opportunity has developed your career prospects?
It’s improved them greatly! I now have experience with an industrial environment, and I have acquired an extensive range of skills that are not just specific to this job but any job plus general life skills. I’m essentially a project manager so I have to be able to organise my time efficiently. Prioritising tasks correctly is also vital in order to keep all of my clients happy, especially as I am now working to very tight deadlines.
What was your greatest challenge?
Running 5 projects in parallel was a great experience. It was very time consuming and consequently enabled me to manage my time effectively. The research and development to get a new product into the market place was very challenging but when it was all finalised it was a very proud moment for me.
What was the social life like?
I’ve had a great time; made loads of friends from different departments and sites at Vauxhall. Luton isn’t the best night out but it’s all about the people you’re with rather than the location. There are always lots of social events to get involved in such as EXCITE (an employee engagement programme). Fellow colleagues have also arranged weekends away (we’re very close to Luton Airport) which have been brilliant.
If you had to describe your experience at Vauxhall in three words what would they be?
Well worth it!
