Rolls-Royce – Company Profile
Placement Employer’s Profile
About Us...
Rolls-Royce provides integrated power systems that redefine what’s possible on land, sea and air. At any one time, around 400,000 people are flying in aircraft powered by Rolls-Royce engines. Our ability to keep those aircraft in the sky is a powerful illustration of the ‘mission-critical’ nature of what we do.
Hidden beneath the ocean – with our reactor providing its propulsion and energy – the Astute Class submarine can circumnavigate the world without resurfacing and go for 25 years without refuelling.
And on land, our power equipment is generating electricity on installations all over the world from Svalbard in the Arctic, to Samarinda in the jungle of Borneo and Tierra del Fuego on the edge of Antarctica.
Real-world experience
Programmes are available in most of our business areas. Whether you choose a short-term placement (generally 10-12 weeks in the summer holidays) or a longer-term 12-month internship, we’ll give you real-life objectives and expect you to make a contribution to your department from day one.
Whilst challenging, this gives you every opportunity to learn valuable skills, as well as providing an insight into what you might be capable of in the future. And we’ll be sure to provide you with all the support you need, including advice and guidance to help you make the most of your time with us.
What’s more, at the end of the programme, we’ll give you clear feedback, evaluating your strengths, your development needs and possible future career options. And, of course, as a real member of the team, you’ll get a real salary too - £17,850 p.a. with any subsequent offer of a place on one of our graduate programmes attracting an additional bursary.

Meet Katie
- Name: Katie
- University: Queen's University
- Position: ummer Internship – Noise Engineering 12-month Internship – Fleet Development
On why she chose to come to Rolls-Royce
I was keen to have an industrial placement that would give me an insight into a wide variety of technical disciplines. Looking on the internet, I realised Rolls-Royce wasn’t just a leading ‘British aerospace’ company. The four businesses make it a global engineering company, and I found that very appealing.
On the variety of opportunities available
Because the company has such a broad range of jobs available, I’ve been able to experience two completely different areas of engineering.
On my first placement with Transmissions Development
I gained an understanding of the whole engine, with particular focus on the transmission components. My current placement with Noise Engineering has been completely different. I’ve relied much more on the knowledge I gained at university to understand a very detailed subject.
On being challenged to perform
During my 12-month placement, I was given several tasks I had to project manage. The level of responsibility I was given surprised me, but it made me work and think independently and start making decisions for myself. It was reassuring to know, though, that the rest of the team were always there to help if needed.
On her most memorable experiences
While working for the Development team, I was involved with several engine tests. During one, at an outdoor test facility, I went outside to see the engine running. Despite being several hundred metres away, the sheer power of the jet nearly blew me over! Being able to experience something like that at first-hand puts the work you do into perspective.
On how she’s benefited from her time at Rolls-Royce
Working for a company like Rolls-Royce is very different from university, and doing a placement indicates to employers that you’re able to work in the ‘real world’. I think an industrial placement looks good on a CV, and increases your chances of gaining employment in the future. Personally, I also feel very proud, knowing that I’ve helped validate changes to engines now flying around in the sky.
