About Morgan Stanley

Morgan Stanley - SkyscraperMorgan Stanley is a leading global financial services firm providing a wide range of investment banking, securities, investment management and wealth management services. Founded in 1935, the Firm has over 60,000 employees in more than 1,300 offices in 42 countries, serving clients worldwide including corporations, governments, institutions and individuals.
EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) continues to be one of the firm’s largest and fastest-growing markets. Over the last 15 years the number of employees there has almost quadrupled and the number of countries where we operate has grown from eight to 18.

A position of leadership

Since its foundation, Morgan Stanley has been at the forefront of innovations which helped to shape the course of modern finance. From historic underwritings for General Motors, IBM and the World Bank in the 1950s, to the Apple IPO in the 1980’s and Google in the new millennium, the firm has understood important trends and developed new markets.

Today those include premier positions working with hedge funds (as a leader in prime brokerage), leadership positions in emerging markets, such as Russia, China, and the Middle East, and our acclaimed approach to commodities investing, including our presence in the physical commodities markets through oil tanker and power plant ownership.

Morgan Stanley’s pioneering role in the global expansion of the finance services industry, together with our geographic scope, deep understanding of markets and long experience meeting client needs have not only made us a leader in providing the finest in financial thinking and products but also given our recruits an unrivalled global platform for their careers.

We give our people responsibility early, so they can soon make an impact on our business and the world at large.

Individuality is prized and people are encouraged to be themselves. Diversity is fundamental to our corporate culture.

Morgan Stanley people “think like owners” taking pride in our worldwide reputation and entrepreneurial culture that keeps us at the head of a fast-moving industry.

A sense of community

Morgan Stanley is committed to making a positive impact in the communities in which it operates, across Europe, the Middle East and Africa (“EMEA”).

Through the provision of grants and with dedication from employees, the Morgan Stanley International Foundation (MSIF) and the EMEA Community Affairs programs aim to increase opportunity and access in the areas of children’s health and education. We help those that need it the most.

To ensure communities are better served, Morgan Stanley volunteers share their time and expertise in numerous ways such as inspiring and mentoring young people, teaching school children to read, and transforming parks and hospital gardens.

Meet Rachael

  • Name: Rachael
  • University: Oxford, New College
  • Course: Mathematics
  • Position: Analyst in IBD (UK M&A)

  • What was the application process like?

The application process was fairly standard to what I found across Investment Banks. I had to apply on-line and do some online tests. I was then asked to do first round interviews on campus, then second round interviews in the office. Finally, I attended a full-day assessment centre which involved a group exercise, a presentation and further interviews. What stood out for me was that I was assigned a buddy who gave me advice throughout the process, which made it a lot less daunting!

What did you do on a daily basis?

Everyday of my internship varied; there were lots of events organised throughout the internship, from informal meetings with Managing Directors to interactive games with my fellow interns. On a day-to-day, I sat with my assigned team and they gave me projects to work on. As the weeks went on, and my knowledge increased, I began to add more value to the team. I also shadowed other bankers to understand what other teams did, which gave me a much better understanding of the division as a whole.

    What was your greatest challenge?

I would say my biggest challenge on the internship was sleep. It may sound silly, but I think it is easily overlooked. The internship is crammed full of events and the days are long. The worst thing an intern can do is fall asleep during a presentation or be so tired that they can’t perform well on the desk. You have to learn (quickly) how to best mange your time between working hard, socialising and sleeping!

What did you learn on your placement / internship?

I learnt a lot on my internship about the different divisions, what it was actually like to work in an Investment Bank and what area of the firm I thought was right for me. When I was offered a full-time position after my internship it felt absolutely amazing. Not only did I go back to University feeling grateful to have secured a graduate position, I knew it was where I wanted to start my career and I knew I’d like the people.

How has this placement / internship affected your career prospects?

In addition to jump starting my career, the internship gave me a strong network of people also starting in the industry, many of whom I now consider to be good friends. We really got to know each other through the week of training as well as the social events held throughout the internship.

Any top tips for a student interested in a placement / internship here?

My top tips for those who are thinking about an internship at Morgan Stanley would be: be punctual and enthusiastic. Be confident but not arrogant and, most importantly, be yourself. It doesn’t matter what degree you’re studying or how much technical knowledge of Finance you have. What matters is that you demonstrate the ability to learn new concepts quickly and are passionate about the markets and business in general.
