Placement (10 Months+)

How would you describe the breadth of Network Rail's work and the breadth of our opportunities for graduates?

Working with multiple functions whilst completing my placement I experienced the large variety of roles at Network Rail, but most importantly; I was able to see firsthand how each individual has a part to play in achieving Network Rail's purpose to Run, Manage and Maintain Britain's Rail Infrastructure. The various functions along with the ever-changing nature of the rail industry open the door to a wide number of opportunities for Graduates and Placement Students and a chance to really see Network Rail's work from multiple angles.

How varied have you found your role at Network Rail?

Having worked on a large scale project; bringing the LNW Structures Examinations in-house, the work I undertook was completely varied. One day I could be completing documentation to gain board approval, the next I could be arranging for vehicles and accommodation to be in place, or I could be taking part in meetings with Senior Management discussing the programme. Not one week was the same as the next, which allowed me to gain a larger variety of skills than I ever expected.

What's the most exciting work you've done here?

The project I worked on involved transferring approximately a hundred employees from the previous contractor to Network Rail. The month leading up to this transfer was definitely tense and extremely busy, but also the most exciting time of my placement. Ensuring everything was ready and in place for 'day one' meant being organised, using my initiative and coping under pressure. It allowed me to put my skills into practice and realise my potential.

What's been the best thing for you?

Being given the opportunity to undertake high-level tasks for Senior Management pushed me to strive to achieve. It allowed me to develop skills learnt at university and in previous jobs, but also gain new skills. The tasks undertaken as a whole at Network Rail enabled me to test my knowledge and to try new and exciting things. Finally, the placement allowed me to grow as a person, gaining confidence in my work, which will stand me in good stead for the future.

Why Network Rail?

I would recommend Network Rail to any undergraduate/graduate looking for a Placement or Graduate Scheme. Not only does the organisation open doors to so many opportunities and give you the chance to experience multiple functions and roles, it also ensures that you reach your potential and more. You are treated as a member of the team, an asset to the organisation and are given an experience that will be beneficial to your future career.
