Our tour of the Midlands begins!

Posted by Oliver on 27th May 2008 in Blog, Events

This week Ali and myself shall be touring the Midlands meeting more university staff than we actually did during our combined 8 years at university! Throw in a couple of meetings with work placement employers and the grand total reaches 13 meetings in this short 4 day week… Not a bad start to our lives as full time RateMyPlacement employees.

As a website geared around feedback we thought it best we keep you up to date with our progress and rate our opinions on campus… Enjoy.

Spare Room Start Up…

Spare Room Start Up

Last night Ali and I went to a book launch for Emma Jones’ new book entitled Spare Room Start Up… “A book launch?!”  I hear you say? “You’re 23, a year out of uni and you go to book launches?!”… Well yes that is true, but if there’s free champagne and the opportunity to network, we’re in!

It was a good evening spent sipping the bubbly stuff and chatting to people from all types of industries from The Telegraph Business Club to Channel 4 and from Angels Den to San Sharma the book designer!

Emma Jones wrote the book after creating her home business website www.enterprisenation.com and wanted to help and encourage those thinking about working from home to actually taking the plunge and doing so. The book itself is a great read and full of advice for those looking to start a business from home; so it’s perfect for RateMyPlacement at the moment as we are turning Ali’s spare room into an office as we speak!

Look out for us next week as we referee at the local backgammon society… Rock and roll…

RateMyPlacement goes full time…

Oliver working flat out

Full time work commenced on Tuesday, which unfortunately coincided with the hottest day of the year. As you can see from the photo Oliver was working flat out all day, it can be really tough being in charge of your own business…

Up until now, RateMyPlacement has been like having a high maintenance girlfriend for us - it is has eaten up all our free time at evenings and weekends and has had a serious impact on our social lives! However, things are starting to get serious and we now feel the time is right for us to take the plunge. This is obviously quite a big step for us and the business, however we feel that by focusing all our time and energy on RateMyPlacement we can propel the site from a part-time student-run business into the number one online resource for undergraduates throughout the UK. Over the next few months we aim to work alongside all placement and careers services at universities to promote RateMyPlacement so all placement students can benefit.  Look out for us on a campus near you!

We anticipate a lot of hard work and long hours, however we are excited about the future and are looking forward to the challenges that lie ahead. If you have any feedback, suggestions or comments feel free to contact us - even if it is just to give Oliver some tanning advice!

Our television debut!

Posted by Alastair on 7th May 2008 in Blog, News

If you live in the Midlands you may have been lucky enough to see our long overdue debut on the small screen. We were featured (twice) in a news bulletin on Central News on the 23rd April, the day of the HSBC Unipreneurs Final. Click on the video below to see a rare appearance from Chris "the techie" Wickson (outside the dark back room, where he usually resides) talk about the Final. Maybe a career in TV beckons.
